William “Bill” Swerdon of Portage passed away Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at VNA Hospice in Valparaiso at age 82.  He is survived by his children: Kristi (Paul) Friedley of Denver, Colo.; Amy Swerdon of New Orleans, La., Kerri (Robert) Blaszkiewicz of Valparaiso; and William “Billy” Swerdon of Portage; grandson Maxwell Blaszkiewicz of Valparaiso; sister Virginia Swerdon of Denver; brother John (Rebecca) Swerdon of Portage; good friend and nephew Bill Cole of Denver; longtime friend Thomas Milteer of Las Vegas, Nev.; and his loyal dog, Brees. He was preceded in death by former wife and good friend Dorothy (Adams) Swerdon; sister Elizabeth Cole and parents William and Elizabeth Swerdon.  Born in Gary, Bill was a 1957 graduate of Tolleston High School. He played college basketball for Odessa College in Odessa, Texas, earned his bachelor’s degree from Southwest Missouri State and his master’s degree from Indiana State University. Bill served in the U.S. Army before beginning his longtime career teaching physical education to countless elementary school students in the Portage Township Schools.  Bill also worked for Methodist Hospitals Northlake for years while teaching.  Bill instilled his children with kindness, a strong sense of humor and a love of the music of the Beatles. He was devoted to his family, including all dogs, who were sure to be well fed when visiting his house. He enjoyed fishing, creating artwork and was an avid fan of Indiana University basketball, Chicago Cubs baseball and Notre Dame football.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
