Richard Arnold Staats, 87 of Valparaiso slept away on January 31, 2016.  He was born on October 12, 1928, the son of Chester and Mildred; and brother of Robert (Janet) deceased and C. Irving (Anne) Staats.  He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothea (Usher) Staats; daughter, Lindy Stacy of St. Peters, MO; son, Bradford (Linda) of Columbia City; grandchildren, Katharina and Kristopher Staats, Richard (Tiffany) and Todd Stacy; and great grandson, Brody Rhodes.  Richard was a life member of St. John’s Lodge No. 1 A.F.A.M. of Newport, RI and the Oak Shrine.  He was an elder and choir member of First Presbyterian Church of Valparaiso and an enthusiastic member of SPEBSQSA, Inc. (Barbershop).  One of his fondest memories was his chapter’s participation in an international competition.  Richard served in the Army of Occupation in Japan and was recalled as an officer during the Korean Conflict.  A graduate of the University of Rhode Island, where he was a member of Phi Mu Delta Fraternity and Scabbard and Blade, he was a licensed Professional Engineer and worked as a consultant after retiring from Bethlehem Steel.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church 3401 N. Valparaiso St., Valparaiso with the Rev. Dr. Mark Mueller officiating.  The family will receive friends during the hour before the service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to: First Presbyterian Church of Valparaiso Music Ministry or the Shriners Hospital for Children 2211 North Oak Park Ave., Chicago, IL 60707-3392.
