Captain
Martin A. Miller, U.S.M.C. (Retired), 88, of
Valparaiso, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2012.
He was born July 13, 1923 in
Valparaiso
to Paul H. & Cecile L. (Beu) Miller, graduated from Valparaiso High School and
entered the Marine Corps in July of 1941.
Marty rose to the rank of Captain during his 20 year career in the Corps
and saw significant combat at Guadalcanal during WWII and again at Chosin
Reservoir in Korea
where he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
He then entered Valparaiso
University and received a B.A. in
History in 1964 which he used to begin a teaching career from 1967 – 87 at Valparaiso High School, earning his M.A. along the
way. Marty remained active in local
politics over the years in various capacities which included the Valparaiso
Board of Zoning Appeals and Plan Commission.
He was a member Heritage
Lutheran
Church
and always led the way with any activity he undertook.
On September 11, 1949
he married Barbara Brudi who survives along with their sons: Dr. William Miller
of Athens, GA, Dr. David (Lauren) Miller of
Fayetteville, AR, Dr. Phillip (Ellen) Miller of Minneapolis, MN, sisters:
Marilyn Lembke & Helen “Dutch” (Robert) Zimmerman of Valparaiso, sister-in-law,
Mary Lohr of Wisconsin, and grandchildren: Maggie, Allison, Christopher,
Matthew, Alex, Jason & Sydney. He
was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Harold, Fred & Robert and
sister, Dorothy McCormack.
Following cremation a memorial gathering
will be held Saturday at Heritage
Lutheran Church, 308 N. Washington St.,
Valparaiso, from noon - 2 pm with memorial
service beginning at 2:00 pm, Rev. Joseph Ostafinski officiating.
Memorials may be made to the church.
